Home Care Givers Needed More Than Ever
Wesley Chapel, Fl. (February 12, 2021) - Imagine being a senior citizen during the pandemic. Confined to your home, not living with family, and perhaps not technologically savvy enough for Zoom or FaceTime. The continuing pandemic has placed an emotional toll on our seniors and their loved ones.
Unlike assisted living and other care facilities in which being around others at least softens the burden, those living out their golden years in their own home can be particularly vulnerable to loneliness and depression. Nonetheless, many seniors feel more comfortable and secure in their own homes and neighborhoods. Enter Seniors Helping Seniors, a national organization with local roots here in Pasco, Hernando, and Citrus Counties.
“Many seniors want to stay in the comfort of their own home, but just need some assistance to do so,” said Vincent Beach, the local franchise owner, who oversees the support many of these older Floridians need. “Services can include not only in-home responsibilities such as meal preparation and light housekeeping but also outside needs such as escorted transportation to medical appointments, hair and nail appointments, grocery shopping or simply going out to lunch.”
Seniors Helping Seniors in home care receivers include people like Betty Oakes who has needed assistance since a recent fall. Betty speaks highly of her caregiver Desiree Cheeseman. “She (Desiree) is such a jewel,” says Betty. “I do not know what I’d do without her help.”
Desiree has been working with Betty for nearly a year. Having previously served as a caregiver to her mother, Desiree has developed a friendship with Betty while helping her recover. Desiree assists Betty with walks outside for exercise and fresh air, prepares meals and attends to her laundry needs. When Desiree heard of the opportunity with Seniors Helping Seniors, it “touched her heart.”
Mature adults who provide these services feel a sense of pride and usefulness in helping others stay independent for as long as possible. Providers, who receive a fee for their services, set up a routine schedule based on the activities the care receiver needs or requests. The local providers for Seniors Helping Seniors, visit clients seven days a week, 365 days a year.
